LA MESA — Cathedral Catholic High School isn’t used to being without a win two games into the season, but they didn’t make it three. The Dons won their third game of the season, a 24-19 victory on the road against Helix, after they dropped their first two games against out-of-section competition.
“We’re going to be good. Our first two games were against two pretty good teams,” coach Sean Doyle said.
Cathedral Catholic was led Friday by Honor Fa’alave-Johnson, who scored two touchdowns and finished with a game-high 79 rushing yards. Fa’alave-Johnson scored the game’s first touchdown in the second quarter with a 4-yard run and added a 7-yard run in the third quarter.
He accounted for more than half of Cathedral Catholic’s 144 total rushing yards. The rushing game was complemented by Koa Smith-Mayall’s 115 passing yards.
Isaac Cook finished with 62 receiving yards, which included a 25-yard run on third down to extend the drive and lead to the Dons’ first three points to begin the second quarter. Smith-Mayall extended the Dons’ lead in the fourth quarter with a quarterback keeper for 22 yards.
Despite three sacks, Caden Thompson made quick passes to accumulate 225 yards while completin g 12 of 18 attempts for Helix.
That was supported by a 75-yard pass to Jeremy Robinson to put Helix on the board in the second quarter, and a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Stevens to begin the fourth quarter.
Thompson connected with Stevens again for a huge 38-yard reception on the following drive, which set up another touchdown in the final minute of the game. The onside kick attempt was unsuccessful and the Dons ran out the clock.
“There’s chances in that game that we should have been up and been winning, but we made some mistakes, and that’s football,” Helix coach Damaja Jones said. “I am proud of our effort.
I am proud of how we played.” Robinson had 88 receiving yards and Stevens had 86 receiving yards. The Dons’ win over Helix was their third in as many seasons.
The all-time series is now tied at 10 wins apeice. Next week, Cathedral Catholic will host Granite Hills while Helix will host Mater Dei Catholic.
