Re “With unanimous committee vote, San Diego moves closer to turning off Flock cameras” ( Oct. 22 ): The headline should read “Criminals 1, citizen victims 0.” This shows the City Council’s soft-on-crime approach.
A picture is worth a thousand words. The Flock cameras are an asset in solving crimes, especially those that occur in high-crime areas.
There is clear evidence of the success enjoyed by police departments around the country using this technology. Crimes such as vehicle thefts, rapes, burglaries, DUIs and assaults have been solved using cameras.
They provide valuable leads to potential suspects and are an essential tool for both police investigations and prosecutors.
I suspect that many who complain about privacy are users of Facebook, Snapchat and other social media who disclose more personal information daily than is displayed on the cameras. Turning off the cameras will mean fewer violent crimes are solved.
Apparently, the victims of crime matter less to city leaders than getting elected to public office.
