SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Last season, JSerra’s football team had to kick a game-winning field goal late in the fourth quarter to beat Oak Hills. JSerra didn’t need any late heroics when it dominated Oak Hills 63-0 on Thursday at JSerra High.
The Lions (3-1) have won three consecutive games and have outscored their last three opponents 163-29. JSerra completes nonleague play against Bishop Amat next week before opening Trinity League play with back-to-back games against St.
John Bosco and Mater Dei. “It’s been fun to watch the guys come together as a team, execute and buy into what we are doing,” JSerra coach Hardy Nickerson said.
“Our main thing is getting one percent better every day. That’s our focus.
There have been some games where we have scored a lot, but our focus is making ourselves one percent better.” JSerra rolled over Oak Hills from the opening whistle and had 336 yards of offense in the first half en route to a 49-0 lead.
Hayes Cloutier completed 7 of 9 passes in the first half with 178 yards and four touchdowns. The senior transfer from North Crowley High in Texas also ran for 53 yards with a touchdown on two attempts.
“It was calm,” Cloutier said of his performance. “We executed pretty well.
We are just trying to build that culture and build upon it each week.” JSerra’s defense was overpowering in the first half as well. The Lions had five sacks and had two interceptions in the half while only allowing one third down conversion in seven attempts.
UCLA commit Godschoice Eboigbodin had three sacks in the first half and finished his night by being named Homecoming king before being pulled for the second half. “He is a tough guy to block,” Nickerson said of Eboigbodin.
“He’s gotten better each week.
It’s been exciting to see him progress and become the dominant player we expect him to be.” The Lions opened the game with a five-play, 57-yard scoring drive capped by a 24-yard touchdown pass from Cloutier to Sam Fredericksen for the first of the pair’s two touchdowns.
After an interception by Dylan Brown, Cloutier rolled to his left and threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Luca Deleon to give the Lions a 14-0 lead. Late in the first quarter, Will Fredericksen broke loose for a 68-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 21.
JSerra had 195 yards of total offense in the first quarter compared to just 36 for Oak Hills. Cloutier ran for a 50-yard t ouchdown on the opening drive of the second quarter and threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Sam Fredericksen on the next drive.
Leuzinger transfer Braylin Spencer intercepted an Oak Hills pass and returned it 50 yards into Oak Hills’ territory. On the ensuing play, Cloutier threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Clark Cokley.
Oak Hills put together a nice drive at the end of the second quarter and drove into the redzone, but JSerra safety Mo Habiballa returned an interception 98 yards for a touchdown to give the Lions a 49-0 lead at halftime. Oak Hills (2-2) was coming off a 25-17 win over Rancho Cucamonga last week.
