La Mesa leaders unanimously appointed Tara Mazzanti as the city’s next attorney on Tuesday, following the planned retirement of longtime City Attorney Glenn Sabine. The announcement concludes Sabine’s over 29 years of service in La Mesa.
He became the city’s full-time attorney in 2019, after holding the role in a part-time capacity for over 20 years. Sabine will retire Oct.
12 and provide transitional support for his replacement until Oct. 30.
“I get to assume the role of backup quarterback for a couple weeks,” Sabine said. The City Council selected Mazzanti to fill the position after an executive recruitment process, according to city records.
She has over 18 years of experience in municipal law serving cities in the state and most recently served as the senior assistant city attorney for Livermore. Throughout her career, she also has provided counsel on municipal issues to the cities of Oxnard, Stockton and Modesto.
“Ms. Mazzanti brings extensive municipal law experience and a strong understanding of the challenges facing California cities,” Mayor Mark Arapostathis said in a statement.
Mazzanti will make an annual salary of $292,000, according to the employment agreement. Each ye ar, the council may conduct an evaluation of her performance.
