North County’s Mosaic Theatricals has closed and postponed its season-opening production of the solo play “Odds Are,” after actor-playwright Smita Russell injured herself onstage during the opening-night performance Oct. 2.
The autiobiographical play is about her history of bad luck. “Smita’s recovery and health remains our top priority,” the company wrote in a statement Tuesday.
“Mosaic Theatricals’ board and staff, together with the production’s producing and creative leadership, are energized by the prospect of bringing this powerful piece back in 2027.
New performance dates will be announced once confirmed.” In an email Monday, the New York-based Russell wrote that she injured her legs doing a “fall and crawl” scene, but she is making the best of the situation by writing it into her play as the latest example of her chronic misfortune.
“My accident seems like bad luck, but sometimes we make the sweetest art from life’s tartest lemons … I’ll be back to defy the odds next year,” she wrote. Mosaic Theatricals said it will be contacting all ticketholders for “Odds Are” about their options.
The play was originally scheduled to run through Oct. 18 at the Bornemann Theatre in San Marc os.
