Nick Canepa grades the Chargers following Sunday’s 26-14 season-opening loss to the Arizona Cardinals at SoFi Stadium: The Judases Judased. Justin Herbert had to start from an unexpected 7-0 hole.
But once he got the ball in his hands, under new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s tutelage, the train seemed to carry gravy. It didn’t.
He had nothing. One of his worst starts, at home, vs.
a team coming off a three-win season. Only three possessions and seven points in the first half?
Not used nearly enough. Omarion Hampton’s 9-yard run vs.
the entire defense for their opening score was All-Pro-worthy. A strong young man.
Then he lost a fumble when hit by his own man, the friendly fire leading to a field goal. Keaton Mitchell can run, folks — run fast.
Ladd McConkey looked like his old self early, getting open and being found by Herbert (three catches on the first drive). Then McConkey caught a TD pass.
Then he hurt his chest and went to the nurse’s office. New tight end David Njoku was seen for a bit.
Oronde Gadsden had a 25-yard catch. Tre Harris had a drop.
Charlie Kolar jumped. Welcomed back were tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt.
Big deal. Slater had a block in the back.
Alt j umped. How many chances is Trey “Turnstile II” Pipkins going to get?
Rookie Jake Slaughter got them into a third-and-30 with penalties. The “D” immediately got pushed around by an offense not expected to be any good.
Starter Jamaree Caldwell, who has talent, got hurt early and then returned. Dalvin Tomlinson had moments.
What did they do? Hard to remember many names mentioned.
Arizona didn’t punt until 2:42 remained in the third quarter. Arizona!
Khalil Mack applied a little pressure, but mostly there was zilch. Just one sack.
Made Jacoby Brissett look like Patrick Mahomes. Donte Jackson couldn’t decide where to hold or interfere.
Tarheeb Still tried to play corner with his back turned. Elijah Molden pulled a hammy.
Even Derwin James Jr. got beat for a short score after a punt block.
JK Scott had a punt blocked by a defender up the middle who wasn’t touched. The block led to a touchdown, making it 23-14.
The only time Cameron Dicker The Kicker lifted his leg was on kickoffs. Prior to the half, Jim Harbaugh decided to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line and Herbert was sacked thanks to Pipkins’ whiff.
Had to tie it up there, Jimmy. Harbaugh may never have coached such a pig game.
His Judases were unprepared in all three phases. If new McDaniel were on Broadway, he would have closed opening night.
The Chargers don’t have many gimmes on their schedule. This was supposed to be one.
Speaking of gimmes, this was thought to be another one. Vegas is coming off a win — granted, it came against a Miami team that may have started tanking in March.
But at least the Raiders won. The Judases stunk.
