SPRING VALLEY – Last year, Poway High School’s Luke Jorgensen was an All-CIF second team running back and the U-T’s Boys Athlete of the Year. With him graduated and now at BYU, it left the Titans’ starting running back role open.
On Friday, in their matchup at Mount Miguel to cap off three straight road contests, Poway used its ground attack to fuel a 42-12 win over the Matadors.
“We really wanted to pound it into them because we didn’t think they would expect it and they thought we would air it out,” said Rowan Marcos, who was Jorgensen’s backup last year and totaled six carries for 122 yards on Friday.
“Our O-line blocked amazing and we got some amazing touchdowns.” Marcos and Carson Williams, whom the latter accumulated six carries for 88 yards, combined to take the Titans’ first six carries and turned that into three touchdowns within the game’s first 5 1/2 minutes.
That included Marcos scoring his first touchdown of the evening on a 47-yard run on the first play of the second drive and Williams running one in from 33 yards out on the third possession after Williams recorded an 8-yard touchdown run on the opening drive.
Poway’s running game was not only calling plays for the ru shers to be in the halfback or the tailback.
They added in plays from nearly a century ago with tight formations and misdirection plays they called “double wing.” “We preach toughness and physicality and for us to kind of play that game in a phone booth, I think it’s big for us,” Poway interim coach Ryan Hernandez said.
“I’m super happy with how the guys performed, especially the O-line.
They played super hard tonight.” Once the Poway (3-2) running game got rolling, it opened up the pass game as quarterback Trenton Schrecker found Carson Williams for a 10-yard touchdown and Trevor Murphy for a 33-yard score to close the half with a 35-0 lead, before a running clock was initiated early in the fourth quarter.
Hernandez, who was a longtime assistant coach in the Titans’ program before taking interim duties in June, said Schrecker continues to show strides before Avocado East League play begins. “I’m so happy for him,” he said of his senior play caller.
“He’s a great quarterback and for us to be able to open it up tonight and have him throw a couple of touchdowns is huge for his confidence. We’re excited.” Mount Miguel (1-3) was led by running back Dominic Lopez, who totaled 24 carries for 72 yards and both of the Matadors touchdowns.
Next week, both teams are off and will resume on Oct. 2 when Poway hosts El Camino in its league opener while Mount Miguel will travel to Helix to begin Grossmont Hills league action.
