Amy Flicker, 56, a human resources executive, is running for San Dieguito Union High School District trustee representing Area 1. Why are you running for school board, and what makes you the best candidate?
(150 words max) I have decades of experience working with both the San Dieguito and Encinitas school districts. I also have years of experience working with and giving back to the City of Encinitas and our community.
From serving as a city commissioner, council PTA president, executive board member of our 14-district special education planning area, member selected for multiple SDUHSD committees and now as the vice president of legislation for the Ninth District California State PTA, covering all of San Diego and Imperial counties, I believe I know this district and the students and families I will be proud to serve.
What are the three most important issues currently facing your district? (150 words max) 1.) Fiscal solvency & governance2.) Responsible AI integration3.) Student-centered education & services What are the top three specific things you would seek to accomplish on the board?
(150 words max) First and foremost, SDUHSD must obtain and maintain a healthy budget. This re quires constant and consistent evaluation and financial modeling.
Ensuring that every single dollar allocated is being used as effectively and efficiently as possible is critical. Second, responsible AI integration is mandatory.
In addition, the board must be nimble and have the ability to pivot, as AI is moving at such a rapid pace. Critical thinking is at the core of a successful student, and I will advocate for a clear framework that enhances what great teachers do, not to replace them.
Third, I strongly believe in student-centered education. We need to meet students where they are with what they need to succeed academically, thrive personally and prepare them for the world they will be walking into.
How should your school district raise student academic achievement, and what would you do as a board member to accomplish that? (150 words max) SDUHSD is proud of the academic achievements of a majority of our students.
When I state “student-centered education,” I mean this to apply to ALL of our students. While SDUHSD is maintaining overall academic success, we can always do better.
Ensuring that ALL students are provided with additional services — be it tutoring, coaching, mentori ng or parent/student/teacher involvement — we can always improve at providing greater wrap-around services and supports. Student absenteeism has generally worsened in recent years across California.
What do you think is driving absenteeism in your district, and what would you do to reduce it? (150 words max) There is not a doubt that COVID turned our typical public education model on its head.
We are still experiencing the ripple effects of those years. Some experts say that it could take a decade before we see things better stabilize.
Recently, California decriminalized truancy/absenteeism (AB 461) and over the past couple of years has moved to a more supportive and collaborative model to address students and families in these situations. I support these moves.
Every student is unique. Their situations are their own.
I believe an effective district strives to understand the situation, be respectful and most importantly collaborate with the student and family members involved to reasonably mitigate or remove whatever barriers there are that are keeping that student from attending school.
Relatedly, many California school districts are seeing enrollment decline, which exacerbates fu nding problems. What should your district do to drive new enrollment?
(150 words max) Yes, this is not only an immediate challenge, but future modeling is showing that this will be an ongoing challenge for Districts across California. SDUHSD is not immune — however, our enrollment decline has been more gradual.
Since 2020, we have a lost enrollment of approximately 1,000 students across our 10 campuses. Any dip in enrollment negatively impacts a district’s budget, which is why fiscal health and future planning is imperative.
To drive new enrollment would need to take into account multiple factors in our economic and social systems. However, what a district can influence and control is the quality of the product being offered.
Continuing not only to hold a bar of the highest standards but also striving to move it even higher would be my ongoing goal.
