LOS ANGELES — While Alaric Jackson’s two-game suspension was reduced to one on appeal on Wednesday, the Rams are still preparing for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals without their starting left tackle.
Jackson was suspended for punching Buffalo Bills linebacker Bradley Chubb in the face as the teams mingled on the field after the Rams’ overtime loss Monday night .
“Obviously you don’t want those situations to arise that happened after the game, during the game, whenever,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said.
“We understand that as athletes and players that not a whole lot of place for that in our league, so Alaric will learn from it and move on.” In his absence, the Rams will turn to veteran tackle David Quessenberry.
It has been three years since Quessenberry’s last start, back when he was with the Minnesota Vikings. But the 14-year veteran has taken first-team snaps in practice in his two years with the Rams (2-3) as the team has managed Jackson’s blood clots and other health issues.
That experience both in the NFL and the Rams’ offense creates some confidence in Quessenberry’s ability to step in and protect Stafford’s blind side.
And for the veteran’s part, he enjoys th e certainty of knowing he’ll play left tackle after a couple of years preparing to come in on either side in case of injury. “I’m fired up, ready to roll.
It’ll be a good run. I like the game plan and I’m excited to get out there and let it roll with the boys,” Quessenberry said.
“It’s kind of nice knowing, ‘Hey, on Sunday we’re going to start the game and we’re rolling.’ When you’re a swing guy preparing for both sides, there’s a lot of situations that you don’t know how it’s going to play out.
So rolling into a game knowing you’re guy to start and roll, it’s nice.” “Obviously a lot of trust in DQ,” Stafford added. “He’s proven himself in this league.
He’s a guy that can step in and make plays and do what he’s supposed to do.” Quessenberry has taken over as the veteran of the offensive line room this year.
When Rob Havenstein retired in the offseason, the younger players in the room appointed Quessenberry to continue Havenstein’s arbitrary points system as a way to keep the group light. “He’s got a lot of wisdom.
Through experience, he’s able to share,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “He has a great understanding of what we’re really trying to be able to get done.
When you can draw o n a lot of those different experiences, that can be really powerful.” The Rams opened the practice window for offensive lineman Keagen Trost on Thursday. The rookie was a full participant.
If the week of work goes well, there is a chance he will be activated from injured reserve against the Cardinals (1-4). “I think we want to see because it’s been a little bit of time since he’s played football,” McVay said.
“But if he is feeling good, I expect him to be up for the game.” Reserve guard Justin Dedich (hand) has more or less healed from the injury that landed him on injured reserve, too, McVay said. But the Rams are slow-playing his return as they manage their roster spots.
“He could be a guy that we could start his clock as well. Fortunately, we’ve been relatively healthy on the interior parts of our line and can’t have enough good players,” McVay said.
“So that’s one of those deals that he’s working in the meantime. We’ll pray that we stay healthy, but at some point we’ll start his clock and get him going.” Tight end Davis Allen (foot) did not practice on Thursday, but McVay did not sound concerned about his status for the Cardinals game.
“He was telling me he wants to be able to practice,” McVay said. “So we’re just kind of erring on the side of caution.” Linebacker Nate Landman (wrist/shoulder), tight end Colby Parkinson (shoulder) and cornerback Josh Wallace (shoulder) were all limited in Thursday’s practice.
Safety Kam Curl was a late addition to the injury report with an ankle injury, logging a limited practice.
