SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Giants had a vastly different active roster on Monday than the one they had just 24 hours earlier , as shortstop Willy Adames, outfielder Victor Bericoto and right-hander JT Brubaker were all added to the injured list while five other players were promoted from Triple-A Sacramento.
Adames (left elbow sprain), Bericoto (right knee bone bruise), and Brubaker (bruised ribs) were all banged up in the Giants’ 5-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday that closed out a six-game road trip.
Adames, who had an MRI on Monday, will miss more than 10 days, though manager Tony Vitello said the team is optimistic the veteran can return before the season ends in late September. Adames was scheduled to meet with team doctors on Monday night.
Adames sustained the injury in the top of the first inning when he slid into home plate and collided with catcher Connor Wong. Still in discomfort, Adames remained in the game until the bottom of the fifth after striking out in the top half.
Adames, who has also been bothered by a bad back this season, hoped for the best on Sunday but conceded the injured list was a possibility if he had to miss a few days. After missing a week , Adames returned to the lineup on Aug.
19 and in his last five games had a 1.064 OPS with two homers and three RBIs. Following Monday’s series-opener against the Cincinnati Reds at Oracle Park, the Giants have 31 games left over the final 34 days.
“I think everyone saw the replay of the catcher’s knee jamming into (Adames’ elbow),” Vitello said before Monday’s game. “I think initially it kind of scared him.
… He knew something was wrong, and he didn’t look like himself that third at-bat. He’s been swinging the bat really well, so it was wise of everyone to agree to get him out of the game, and he’ll need a little bit of time.
“Maybe that’ll help his back as well. But it’d be nice to get him back before the season ends and get him back in that rhythm he was.” Infielders Nate Furman and Shay Whitcomb, outfielder Grant McCray and right-handers Anthony Molina and Ryan Walker were all recalled from Sacramento.
Furman, Whitcomb and McCray were all in Monday’s lineup at second base, third base and right field, respectively.
First baseman Bryce Eldridge was placed on the bereavement list following the recent death of his grandfather, and left-hander Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson was optioned t o Triple-A following two big league appearances, including one on Sunday when he started against the Red Sox and allowed four earned runs and seven hits over 3 2/3 innings.
In 5 2/3 innings over two appearances, Wilkinson had a 6.35 ERA, struck out two and allowed eight hits. Vitello didn’t rule out bringing Wilkinson back on Saturday, when the Giants play a split doubleheader against the Diamondbacks.
“What he and a couple of the other younger guys did with the ball in Fenway against the hottest team in the big leagues, against that lineup, I think, is really encouraging,” Vitello said. “I love the competitiveness, and there’s no question he’s going to need to develop a little bit.
But the core of who he is as a competitor is exactly what we’re looking for.” Bericoto sustained a right knee injury in the bottom of the fifth as he attempted to catch a fly ball in foul territory.
After a fan interfered with the ball, resulting in an automatic out, Bericoto turned away to avoid being hit in the face but twisted his knee. He went down in pain and remained on the ground for several minutes.
Like Adames, Bericoto had an MRI early Monday and was scheduled to meet with doctors later in the day. Brubaker was hurt in the bottom of the sixth inning Sunday as he dove to catch a bunt by Red Sox outfielder Eli White.
For Monday’s game, Rafael Devers was back at first base, Jung Hoo Lee was the designated hitter, Turner Hill was in left field and Christian Koss was at shortstop.
Devers had played first base in 89 of the Giants’ 130 games this season before Monday, committing seven errors for a fielding percentage of .991. Devers had also been San Francisco’s designated hitter for 41 games and entered Monday hitting .241 with an OPS of .788 for the season.
Before Monday, Eldridge had played first base in each of the Giants’ last 11 games, committing just one error and collecting nine assists.
In that time, he hit .275, including three home runs, with a .870 OPS, raising his season totals in both categories, as he hit safely in eight of his last nine games. Following the Giants’ three-game series against the Reds, they begin a four-game set with Arizona on Thursday.
That series is followed by a seven-game road trip, beginning with a make-up game against the Atlanta Braves on Aug. 31.
That scheduled June 16-18 series in Atlanta was shortened to two games, with the June 18 gam e postponed to the end of this month.
