SAN JOSE — Police on Tuesday announced the arrest of three people suspected in a series of chain snatch robberies in San Jose. The first incident was reported just before 3 p.m.
on Aug. 20 in the 5300 block of Almaden Expressway, San Jose police spokesperson Stacie Shih said in a news release.
Shih said the victim, an elderly woman, was approached by a woman who forcibly took her ring and gold chain necklace. The suspect then left the scene in a vehicle driven by a man.
Officers used automated license plate reader cameras to identify a suspect vehicle, which was then monitored until it traveled out of the city, Shih said. On Aug.
21, the car showed up in Concord, where the suspects tried to rob another person, Shih said. The car was then tracked to a business in the 2200 block of Senter Road in San Jose.
Officers stopped the car and detained the occupants, identified as a 36-year-old man, a 34-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman. At the same time, an elderly woman approached the officers and told them the trio had just robbed her of a gold chain necklace.
Shih said the 30-year-old woman was found with a bag containing multiple pieces of gold jewelry. Detectives launched an investi gation and ultimately linked the suspects to a third robbery that happened Aug.
16 in the 5300 block of Almaden Expressway, Shih said, adding that the victim was an elderly man. The trio was arrested on suspicion of robbery and booked into Santa Clara County jail.
Shih said San Jose, along with the rest of the Bay Area, is experiencing an uptick in chain snatch robberies. “In these cases, the suspects typically approach elderly victims walking in public and forcibly remove the gold chain necklace off the person,” Shih said.
“Oftentimes, the suspects will use distraction techniques, such as selling jewelry, striking up a conversation or swapping the jewelry out without the victim’s knowledge.” Anyone with information related to the cases can contact Detective Parminder Thandi at [email protected] or 408-277-4166.
