SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Tijuana Municipal Little League fans did Tuesday what they always do — cheer until the last moment.
The green-clad fans’ catchy chants, green-white-and-red pom-poms, and big-head signs were the talk of the Mexico team’s appearance in the Little League World Series.
While Tijuana Municipal’s run came to an end Tuesday with a 3-1 loss to Japan, players and fans created memories that will last for a lifetime.
“It’s wonderful and unique to see people from other countries amazed by the support we give the kids and excited by all the noise we make,” said Adriana Fonseca, mother of Tijuana Municipal player Jorge Fonseca.
Adriana Fonseca said she will cherish the moments when fans from other countries came up to them to wish them good luck, either trying to do so in Spanish or in their native language, or simply giving them a thumbs-up.
Most of the Tijuana chants heard throughout the competition have been around for years in the Tijuana Municipal Little League, said Johanna Núñez, the cousin of Tijuana Municipal player Tadeo Páez.
She came up with one that goes, in part, “Verde, blanco y rojo, México es pasión,” which translates to “Green, white, and red, Mexico i s passion.” Tijuana Municipal’s fans seemed to raise the bar for their opponents, too.
Before first pitch, Marina Padilla — mother of Tijuana Municipal’s Matías García — greeted some baseball fans who approached her section and painted the colors of the Mexican flag on their cheeks. Among the fans receiving the impromptu face painting was one LLWS usher.
Another fan, Williamsport resident Diana Folkerts, was proud to sport the verde, blanco y rojo on her cheek. She attended school in Mexico years ago.
“It’s wonderful,” Folkerts said of the fans. “They are very enthusiastic.” Tijuana Municipal families surprised player Néstor Melchor with “Las Mañanitas,” the traditional Mexican birthday song, as he left the batting cages before Tuesday’s game.
One of Melchor’s friends put a birthday hat on him before he walked up to Volunteer Stadium. Melchor received balloons and his favorite candies and chocolates, the result of the Tijuana Municipal parents’ Monday night visit to a nearby Dollar Tree.
“We wanted him to feel supported by us coaches, the parents, and the players, so we organized something for him,” said Tijuana Municipal coach Francisco Fimbres. Melchor’s parents couldn’t make the trip due to visa issues, so the team and their families wanted to show their love.
“I’m so grateful to the whole team for their kind gesture toward my son,” Ángela Robles, Melchor’s mom, said in a phone interview. “I’m so proud of all of them.” And all of Mexico and beyond can be proud of Tijuana Municipal’s fans.
“Everyone sends us photos and tags us on Instagram,” Padilla said. “They’ve told us, ‘We saw you on TV.
We can feel Mexico’s support. We can feel the love.’”
