The San Diego Humane Society is seeking the public’s help after a kitten was found in San Diego’s Stockton neighborhood with a zip tie around the animal’s mouth and neck. On Sept.
23, the 3-month-old male kitten wandered into a home looking for food and water in the 33rd Street area. A community member contained him and contacted the Humane Society.
The zip tie cut into both corners of his mouth and left an injury on his neck, according to Humane Society officials. He was not wearing a collar or other identification, and the person who found him had not seen him in the area before, the agency stated.
A humane officer responded and took him for emergency care at a clinic in Mission Valley, where the zip tie was removed and pain medicine was administered, the agency reported.
He was then taken to the Humane Society’s Center for Shelter Medicine, where he was treated for pain and fleas and started on antibiotics. About a week later, veterinarians repaired the deeper cut on the left side of his mouth and neutered him.
The kitten, who has been named Derry, has been social and affectionate despite his injuries, and on Tuesday was adopted by a member of the agency’s Humane Law Enforcement team.
“There is no excuse for a zip tie cutting into a kitten’s mouth, and no excuse for leaving him to suffer,” said Jace Huggins, vice president and chief of Humane Law Enforcement at the San Diego Humane Society. “We do not yet know how this happened, and we are not going to guess.
What we know is that Derry was hungry and in pain when a neighbor did the right thing and called us. If someone knows anything about this case, we’d like to hear from them.
No detail is too small.” Investigators urged anyone with information to contact officers at 619-299-7012 or
