Two nights after the biggest win in franchise history, the Valkyries kept the good times rolling right into Connecticut.
Golden State dominated the Sun from the jump and won 89-64 in Uncasville, picking up its second straight win to prolong a strong start to a four-game road trip before the WNBA’s FIBA World Cup break.
The Valkyries (27-11) led 26-11 after a quarter, 55-27 at the half and kept the pedal down in the third to maintain the 28-point advantage heading into the fourth.
With a lineup composed entirely of bench and developmental players, Golden State was unable to break the franchise record for points (102) despite entering the third with 80 on the scoreboard.
Still, the Valkyries set a new franchise record for bench points in a game (54) and set a new high-water mark for margin of victory in a road game this season.
All 14 players on the roster saw some game action days before Gabby Williams, Janelle Salaün and Cecilia Zandalasini are set to depart for the World Cup.
Coach Natalie Nakase said before Wednesday’s game that those three would play against the New York Liberty on Thursday and then depart for Berlin, missing the Valks’ game against Portland on Sunday.
Golden St ate was coming off the high of their best win of the season and likely in franchise history, a 80-66 rout of the Minnesota Lynx on the road Monday. Salaün rolled her ankle when she was fouled on a 3-pointer late in the first quarter.
She remained in the game after the foul was upgraded to a flagrant 1 upon review and sank the ensuing free throw, then played a normal amount of minutes for the rest of the game before the primary rotation players were substituted.
