Season two of "The Lowdown" finds journalist and self-described "truthstorian" Lee Raybon facing a new mystery while navigating complicated family dynamics and several new characters to the series.
Episode one sees Lee, played by Ethan Hawke, winning an award for the investigative piece that drove last season's story.
His chaotic acceptance speech catches the eye of Ginger, a public defender played by Betty Gilpin, who gets him involved in a mystery of her own: a prisoner she represented has gone missing in prison and now she is being followed.
"It's just dancing back and forth and she's wicked smart and was hell bent to try to have a three-dimensional woman in the foreground of this show and she succeeded," Hawke said of Gilpin's character.
"A lot of times I feel like in playing the femme fatale, it's a very sort of perfect, squinty, mysterious kind of one-dimensional and Ginger felt just as real in the writing as Lee does," Gilpin said.
"The Lowdown" creator Sterlin Harjo said the goal for the second season was to build on season one's foundation. "With season two it was like OK, let's stay in that world but then elevate everything, raise the stakes but also bring new people into the fold that will elevate it as well.
Betty being one of them, Tommy Lee Jones being the other," Harjo explained. Jones plays Lee Raybon Sr., a lifelong grifter who arrives in town unexpectedly after not seeing his son for 20 years.
It's a story that made sense for Harjo to explore, according to Hawke. "He's so mischievous and irreverent and there's a good rock and roll spirit to Sterlin, and he likes to sniff out anything fake," said Hawke.
"I think that he really wanted to know Lee on a deeper level. And this idea, I think there's certain things a good writer wants to write about, and the father-son dynamic was something I think he really wanted to write.
I love it." Their relationship may give some clues as to why Lee is so dogged in his search for the truth, since he grew up with a father who didn't always tell it.
"His father is incredibly intelligent and it's going to have an intimidating power of intelligence, which has an effect on a younger person, you know, of not feeling smart enough.
And if that father is manipulating the truth then you're gonna be hell bent to try and find firm ground to stand on," Hawke said.
"That's an emotional family terrain that is very enjoyabl e for me to play." Jones said after watching season one and Harjo's show, "Reservation Dogs," signing on for "The Lowdown" was an easy yes.
"This is the father-son theme...it's a very old story except ours is the one we're telling, which makes it entirely unique," Jones said. "I thought this was going to be a world...
and be a joy to live in and work in. By the way, Lee Sr.
is a terrible liar. It's important to know that," he laughed.
"The Lowdown" is streaming now on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+, with new episodes dropping weekly. The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of FX, Hulu and this ABC station.
