A three-vehicle crash in South Los Angeles, which included a Los Angeles Police Department squad car, left as many as four people injured on Friday morning. According to the LA Fire Department, the crash was reported in the area of Vernon Avenue and Avalon Boulevard at about 10:54 a.m.
Security camera video shows the LAPD patrol SUV crossing the intersection as other cars stopped at the lights. The footage showed a red SUV driving into the intersection at the same time and colliding with the side of the patrol car.
The impact sent the patrol car into a black sedan that was stopped on the other side of the road. Aerial images showed the LAPD vehicle with a shattered windshield.
The other two vehicles, the black sedan and red SUV, both sustained heavy damage to their front ends. The LA Fire Department said four people were transported to a local hospital in unknown condition.
LAPD said they are expected to be OK. LAPD said the officer involved in the crash was a supervisor from the Community Safety Partnership Bureau.
He was the only one in the car and is expected to be OK. The supervisor and other units were responding to a backup call for an officer who was being attacked by a susp ect.
LAPD said the units had their lights and sirens on. The officer who needed help ended up using a taser to subdue the suspect.
