Casey Mize’s slip down the dugout steps will not throw him off schedule after all. His right ankle taped up, the 29-year-old right-hander threw a bullpen on Wednesday morning without issue and will start Friday’s game in Tampa Bay on turn.
The off-day on Thursday afforded the Padres the opportunity to push his schedule back a day and not have it impact any other starters in the rotation. Walker Buehler will start Saturday, followed by Robbie Ray.
“I feel good,” Mize said after the Padres’ 3-0 win on Wednesday. “We got it taped up pretty good.
That’s going to help me kind of stabilize everything. … Been pretty pleased with the progress, you know, day over day.
So hoping to make even more progress over the next two days.” Mize slipped down the dugout steps after the second inning Saturday, recorded two outs in the third inning and was pulled from the game after seeing his velocity diminish.
Cleared by postgame imaging, Mize took an extra day off from throwing before resuming catch play on Tuesday and by then was optimistic that he could make his next start.
The off-day on Thursday could have allowed the Padres to push him back further in the rotation if he needed extra time, but that subject was never brought up to Mize. “They’ve done a great job where they haven’t been like, ‘Hey, we need to see this by this time,’” Mize said.
“It’s been, ‘Hey, we’re going to reevaluate at the end of every day,’ … and they’ve done a really good job of kind of sticking to that without putting too much pressure on me. You know, so allowing me to move the bullpen back or whatever to kind of give us the best shot.
And so yeah, we’re in a good spot now.” Acquired at the trade deadline, Mize rebounded from the worst start of his career (3 ⅓ IP, 8 ER) in his Padres debut to spin back-to-back quality starts.
He gave up three homers and four runs in 2⅔ innings on Saturday before a frustrating exit from his fourth start. “I mean, I want to play,” Mize said.
“You know, I want to play as much as possible.
So certainly a relief that it wasn’t worse than it is and look forward to getting back out there.” The Padres placed right-hander Jeremiah Estrada on the injured list with a shoulder impingement and recalled right-hander David Morgan from Triple-A El Paso.
It is Estrada’s third stint on the injured list this year. He missed time in April with elbow tendinitis and most of June and July w ith knee inflammation that continued to dog him a bit even after his most recent return from the IL.
Estrada allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning on Aug. 19, got four days off and gave up a run in an inning of work on Monday.
“We’d kind of held him out of a couple games a little while to let that knee calm down, and then he pitched in the game, said he was good to go,” Padres manager Craig Stammen said. “And then after the game, (Estrada) felt a little bit of something in his right shoulder.
So nothing crazy, no MRI, just making sure that we take care of all the ailments right now and hopefully get him back for the stretch run.” Estrada has a 3.48 ERA in 31 innings, posting a 38-to-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio a year after striking out 108 over a career-high 73 innings (3.45 ERA).
His average four-seam is down from 97.9 mph last year to 95.9 mph this year in what’s been a challenging season from the start. Estrada joins right-hander Jason Adam (shoulder) as key relievers on the injured list.
Adam is hoping to return in September. Morgan has a 4.50 ERA in 22 innings this year in the majors and a 5.79 ERA in 18⅔ innings at El Paso.
He also missed time with left knee inflammation before he was optioned to El Paso on Aug. 12.
Nick Pivetta (flexor) returned to San Diego after throwing three innings on Tuesday for low Single-A Lake Elsinore to resume his minor league rehab assignment. Pivetta will head to Arizona, where he will throw his next bullpen ahead of his next rehab start.
