Pedestrian killed, suspect arrested in San Jose hit-and-run

SAN JOSE — A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run collision Thursday night in San Jose, police said. The incident happened shortly before 9 p.m. at the intersection of Rigoletto Drive and South King Road, San Jose police Officer Tanya Hernandez said in a news release. Hernandez said an initial investigation revealed a woman was crossing South King Road in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a 2018 Toyota Tundra making a left turn from westbound Rigoletto Drive. The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital, where she ultimately died from her injuries, Hernandez said. The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner will release the woman’s identity after it is confirmed and her next of kin is notified. Hernandez said the driver left the scene, but officers used automated license plate reader technology to find the suspect vehicle and apprehend the driver. The driver, a man, was arrested on suspicion of crimes related to vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run. The incident marked the city’s 17th pedestrian death and 34th overall traffic fatality of 2026. At this point last year, police had investigated 24 traffic fatalities on city streets.
